Bring your own lockable chain. Get directions. This is situated at the front of the hospital and accessed from Park Road. There is also a free 15 minute drop off and pick up in this car park. There are wheelchair bays on ALL levels. Wheelchair assistance is available at the main entrance, or ask at the reception desk on Level 5. If you are a patient or close family member who needs to use the carpark for an extended period then please talk to your Charge Nurse if you are facing financial pressures, as we may be able to help.
Emergency Department For urgent or critical care, drivers should follow the signs to the Emergency Department which is clearly signposted from the entrance. Transition Lounge Parking Patients can wait in the comfort of the Transition Lounge after discharge while they are waiting for relatives to collect them.
There is a free 15 minute drop off and pick up in car park A opposite the Transition Lounge. There are also two car parking spaces, marked in blue opposite the Transition Lounge, where relatives can park for 5 minutes while they collect their family member. Patients themselves are not eligible for accommodation.
Bedding, towels, and laundry facilities are provided. A kitchen is available but families must supply their own food.
A fee may be charged if you are not eligible for a Ministry of Health subsidy. All bookings must be made via a referral. If you need accommodation, ask your nurse, or one of the He Kamaka Waiora team. Security Officers are on duty 24 hours a day. They patrol all of the facilities on the hospital site. The hospital and wards are locked down each night at 8pm and security guards are stationed at the Level 4 Main Entrance and the Accident and Emergency Department on Level 2.
Auckland City Hospital provides patients and visitors with a number of convenient shopping facilities. These shops are open seven days and sell, among other things, phone cards, newspapers, toiletries, snacks and flowers. There is also a small shopping area across from the hospital on Park Road. Other Services Nearby On Park Road, just two minutes walk from the hospital, there are a number of shops including eat in or takeaway food, petrol station, dairy, superette and hairdresser.
Newmarket shopping centre has a full range of shops. It is 10 minutes walk across the Domain or a quick trip on a Link Bus. Look out for "Hospital Hot Spot" on the wifi networks on your phone, tablet or laptop. You can log in for free wifi. Telephones Coin and card operated telephones are available in the hospital main corridors on all floors.
The unit is open 24 hours-a-day, days-a-year and is staffed by a large team of experienced doctors, nurses and allied health professionals. We have 24 beds in total - 18 are open bed spaces, and the remaining 6 are isolation side rooms. The median length of stay in DCCM is 1. Patients may be admitted to Critical Care from the emergency department, hospital wards, operating theatre or following transfer from another hospital or intensive care unit.
The Department of Critical Care is staffed by a team of highly experienced and professional doctors and nurses who are supported by other healthcare professionals. Medical care is provided by specialist doctors intensivists who are trained to look after very ill patients and doctors training to be specialists in intensive care, anaesthesia, emergency medicine and internal medicine.
Most nurses in critical care are also specialised with postgraduate training and qualifications in intensive care.
Patients requiring intensive care treatment have a nurse allocated to look after them individually. High dependency patients may be cared for by a nurse who is also looking after another patient. Other essential staff members include physiotherapists, dietitians, pharmacists, radiographers, biomedical technicians alongside other healthcare professionals to help care for these very ill patients.
Referral Expectations Patients may be admitted to Critical Care from the Emergency Department, hospital wards, operating theatre or following transfer from another hospital or intensive care unit. Charges If a patient is not eligible for public funded healthcare in New Zealand then there will be a charge for intensive care and high dependency services except if the admission is due to accidental injury and eligible for ACC.
